How YOU can support healthy sharks & oceans
🤝 each of us can make a difference. Dr. Alex Hearn @galapagosshark explains how supporting sustainably sourced seafood and responsibly caught local fish helps strengthen conservation in the Galápagos. Asking restaurants where their seafood comes from — and using tools like @seafoodwatch — increases demand for traceable seafood systems that benefit sharks and coastal communities. Dr. César Peñaherrera Palma @crpenaherrera highlights another way visitors can help: Shark Count @sharkcount, a citizen science program that allows divers to log shark sightings. These data help scientists and managers track shark abundance through time, evaluate marine reserve effectiveness, and guide adaptive management across the Galápagos. From sustainable seafood choices to underwater data collection, individual actions play a real role in protecting sharks. 🎧 Hear the full conversation in our newest episode of Beyond All the Sharks with @migramarnet — now streaming on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. What research ACTUALLY supports shark conservation?
🎓 How do you do research that actually helps sharks? Dr. Shelley Clarke has worked inside fisheries systems for decades — on longline vessels as an observer, at RFMO negotiating tables, and everywhere in between. Her advice to grad students who want to make a difference: focus on fisheries. 🎧 Hear the full conversation in our newest episode of Beyond All the Sharks with Dr. Shelley Clarke — now streaming on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. Heron Island Stingray Pits!
🌊 Standing on a sand flat off Heron Island, we watched a stingray carve out a resting / feeding pit. Through bioturbation, these rays are ecosystem engineers, reshaping the seabed, stirring up nutrients, and supporting reef life. Because they're so well camouflaged under the sand, the #stingrayshuffle was born to protect people from accidentally stepping on rays and feeling a venomous spine. MPA Spotlight: Protecting Sharks in South Africa
🦈 MPA Spotlight: Protecting Sharks in South Africa Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are vital for shark conservation. Sharks that stay within MPAs benefit from consistent protection, while those that move beyond boundaries can be vulnerable to fishing pressures along the edge and further afield. Well-designed MPAs, covering critical habitats and migration routes, help maximize conservation success. 🌐 ISRAs: Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRAs) identify habitats critical for the survival of sharks and rays and help guide conservation measures like MPAs. The Western Indian Ocean ISRA workshop - including South Africa's eastern coast - is now complete: www.sharkrayareas.org/resources/workshop-reports/# 🎧 For more, check out Beyond All the Sharks Ep. 3 featuring Dr. Alison Kock (@alison_kock, @SANParks) — streaming now on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. 📷 Photos by @bigfishexpeditions | Filmed by @sharkman_dan 🙏🏼 📚 Further Reading: Davidson & Dulvy, 2017: www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(17)30482-7?sf88558953=1 Hyde et al., 2022: www.frontiersin.org/journals/marine-science/articles/10.3389/fmars.2022.968853 Albano et al., 2021: www.doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2021.109302 Faure-Beaulieu et al., 2023: www.doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2023.110163 Elston et al., 2022: www.doi.org/10.1111/jfb.15728 Edgar et al., 2014: www.nature.com/articles/nature13022 #AlltheSharks #Netflix #SharkConservation #MarineProtectedAreas #SouthAfrica #MarineLife #Sharks #ISRA #OceanProtection #MarineScience #SustainableManagement #MarineEcosystems

Preservation = Profits for Maldivian economies
🦈 Sharks aren’t just icons of the reef — they’re powering local economies in the Maldives. 🏝️ Thanks to shark tourism, many Maldivians are now able to stay on their home islands, earn a living, and build a future rooted in place. 💵 Instead of profits flowing to foreign-owned businesses, the wealth stays local — a powerful example of how protecting sharks can pay off. 🎧 Hear more from @zuzu_askin & @theoceanicnomad of @miyaru_org in this clip from our first episode of Beyond All the Sharks. 📍Full episode on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts — link in bio. 🙏 With support from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Reef Environmental Education Foundation, and Ocean First Institute #SharkTourism #SustainableLivelihoods #AllTheSharks #Maldives #SharkDocs #SharkScience #Ecotourism #SharkSanctuary #MarineBiology #OceanProtection #Miyaru #Fuvahmulah #ProtectWhatYouLove #SharkWeek #SharkWeek2025 #Netflix #ScubaDiving #AdventureTravel #TravelMaldives #DiveTravel #EcoTourism #OceanAdventure

Bimini's Balance: Fishing, Sharks, & Tourism
🌊 Bimini has never been a place for golf courses — it’s a place to find peace & wilderness. From Ernest Hemingway chasing marlin to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. finding clarity on these shores, Bimini has long been the gamefishing capital of the world. That reputation exists because ecosystems here still work: thriving mangroves, abundant marine life, and a coastline that feels alive. When you protect those ecosystems, the benefits echo far beyond conservation. Shark diving tourism is proof — The Bahamas now hosts the largest shark-diving economy on Earth, built on healthy shark populations. Sustainable development isn’t just good for nature; it’s good for the long-term economy of the islands. 📍 The Bahamas 🎥 Filmed by @Sharkman_Dan | Footage by @wadewithwyatt 🎧 Learn more in our latest episode of Beyond All the Sharks featuring Dr. Matt Smukall @mattsmukall of the Bimini Biological Field Station @biminisharklab — streaming on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.
